Swift® wart and verruca treatment

I'm Dr Harriet Smith, a doctor, and I run this clinic myself. My main focus is treating stubborn warts and verrucas with Swift® microwave therapy, at my clinic on Ecclesall Road South or, where it's appropriate, in your home.

What is Swift®?

Swift® delivers low-dose microwave energy into the skin through a small probe. It heats the affected tissue for a few seconds, and it's designed to help your immune system recognise and respond to the virus that causes warts and verrucas. You can read more on the Swift® website.

What a treatment involves

• A consultation first, so I can check the diagnosis and that Swift is suitable for you.

• Each session takes a few short bursts of a couple of seconds per area.

• Most people need a course of sessions, usually about a month apart.

• There's no cutting, no dressing and nothing to apply at home.

• You'll feel a brief, sharp heat during each burst.

Results vary from person to person. I'll give you an honest view at your consultation.

Warts and verrucas I treat

• Verrucas (plantar warts): on the soles of the feet, including stubborn ones that haven't cleared with other treatments.

• Common, flat and nail-edge warts: on the hands, fingers, knees and around the nails.

• Children's verrucas and warts: I treat children aged 10 and over, with a parent or guardian present.

I treat patients aged 10 and over. I don't treat genital or facial warts. If that's what you need, please see your GP or a sexual health clinic.

Other conditions I treat

I also offer Swift for a few other conditions. For each one I'll need a consultation first to check it's suitable, and I'll tell you honestly if another treatment would suit you better.

• Painful corns: Swift may help some people with painful, persistent corns.

• Fungal nail infection: Swift may be used alongside other treatment for some fungal nail infections.

• Cystic acne: for some people Swift may be an option. Acne often needs treatment from a GP or dermatologist, and I'll advise you if that's the better route.

• Molluscum contagiosum: I can assess whether Swift is suitable (ages 10 and over).

Who Swift may not suit

Swift isn't suitable for everyone. Based on Swift's own safety guidance, it may not be right for you if you:

• Have a pacemaker, defibrillator or other implanted electronic device

• Have metal implants (such as pins, plates or a joint replacement) near the area to be treated

• Have broken, cut or ulcerated skin, or skin that's red, inflamed or recently infected, where the wart or verruca is

• Have diabetes

• Have reduced feeling (neuropathy) or poor circulation in your hands or feet, including Raynaud's

• Have a weakened immune system, from an illness or from medicines such as steroids or methotrexate, or an autoimmune condition

• Take blood-thinning medicine

• Are pregnant or breastfeeding

Some of these don't always rule Swift out. Swift hasn't been tested in some of these groups, so we'd weigh it up together. Swift doesn't set a minimum age, but I treat people aged 10 and over, with a parent or guardian present for children. I'll check all of this at your consultation.

• Single Swift® session: £150 (consultation fee deducted)

• Recommended course of 3 sessions plus pre- and post-treatment consultations: £450
