What is Swift® microwave therapy?

Swift uses a small handheld probe to deliver short, controlled bursts of low-dose microwave energy into the wart or verruca. This heats the affected tissue and is designed to prompt your immune system to recognise and tackle the virus (HPV) that causes warts.

  • No cutting, no dressings and no creams to apply at home

  • Each burst lasts only a few seconds

  • Most people carry on as normal straight afterwards, including school and work

Most people need a course of treatments, usually about a month apart. Results vary from person to person and no treatment works for everyone, but I'll always be honest with you about what's realistic.

Verrucas

Verrucas are warts on the soles of the feet, caused by HPV. They're common and usually harmless, but they can be painful to walk on, slow to clear and easy to pass around the family. I see:

  • Verrucas (plantar warts) on the soles and toes, often with tiny black dots

  • Clusters of small verrucas (mosaic verrucas)

  • Verrucas that haven't responded to plasters, gels or freezing sprays

Before treatment I gently file back any hard skin so the energy reaches the right place.

Warts

Warts are small, rough growths caused by HPV. They can catch on clothing, feel sore and keep coming back. I treat:

  • Common warts on hands, fingers and knees

  • Warts around and under the edges of the nails

  • Warts that haven't responded to over-the-counter treatments or freezing

I don't treat genital or facial warts. For genital warts, please see your GP or a sexual health clinic.

Children's verrucas

Verrucas are very common once children start swimming, PE and sports clubs. Many clear on their own over time, so waiting is a reasonable choice. Treatment may be worth considering if a verruca is painful, spreading or stopping your child from doing things. I'll give you honest advice, including if I think waiting is better.

  • Ages 10 and over. Each burst causes a brief, sharp heat, so I check your child is comfortable with that before we start.

  • A parent or guardian must be present throughout and give consent for under-16s.

  • At home, at their pace. Children often feel more relaxed at home. We can pause, stop or rebook at any time.

  • Usually no time off school. Most children carry on as normal straight after.

Who Swift may not suit

Swift isn't right for everyone, which is why every course starts with a consultation. Based on Swift's own safety guidance, it may not be suitable if you:

  • Have a pacemaker, defibrillator or other implanted electronic device

  • Have metal implants (such as pins, plates or a joint replacement) near the area to be treated

  • Have broken, cut or ulcerated skin, or skin that's red, inflamed or recently infected, where the wart or verruca is

  • Have diabetes

  • Have reduced feeling (neuropathy) or poor circulation in your hands or feet, including Raynaud's

  • Have a weakened immune system, from an illness or from medicines such as steroids or methotrexate, or an autoimmune condition

  • Take blood-thinning medicine

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding

Some of these don't always rule Swift out. Swift hasn't been tested in some of these groups, so we'd weigh it up together. Swift doesn't set a minimum age, but I treat people aged 10 and over, with a parent or guardian present for children. I'll check all of this at your consultation.

If a spot is bleeding, changing or growing quickly, or you're not sure it's a wart, please tell me when you book. If Swift isn't right for you, I'll tell you before you commit.

What to expect at your home visit

  • Consultation. I look at the wart or verruca, ask about your health and previous treatments, and check Swift is right for you.

  • Preparation. I may gently file back any hard skin. All I need is a chair and a little space.

  • Treatment. A few short bursts per area. Most people feel a brief, sharp heat, like a quick sting, for a couple of seconds, and it fades quickly.

  • Afterwards. The area may feel tender for a day or so. You can walk, shower and carry on as normal. I'll give you simple aftercare advice.

  • Follow-up. Further sessions are usually about a month apart, with a post-treatment consultation at the end of your course.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a charge for a home visit?

No. Your home visit in Repton or Willington is included in the £45 consultation fee, so there’s nothing extra to pay. You only pay for your consultation and treatment, at the same prices as my Sheffield clinic.

Does Swift treatment hurt?

Most people feel a short, intense heat or sting for a couple of seconds per burst, which then fades. I'll talk you through it and go at your pace. No anaesthetic or dressing is usually needed.

How many treatments will I need?

Most people need a course about a month apart, which is why I recommend a course of 3. Some need more and some fewer. I'll give you an honest view at your consultation.

Can you treat my child?

Yes, from age 10, with a parent or guardian present throughout. See children's verrucas.

Can I go swimming with a verruca?

Yes. A waterproof plaster or verruca sock helps reduce the chance of passing it on. Don't share towels or footwear, and avoid picking it.

Do I need a referral?

No, you can book directly with me.
